The Central Reserve Police Force ( CRPF) is the largest Indian Central Armed Police Force. It is supervised under the supervision of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of the Government of India. The main purpose of the CRPF is in aiding members of the States as well as the Union Territories in their police operations to enforce law and order , as well as to defeat insurgency. It was founded as the Crown Representative's Police on July 1939. In the wake of Indian Independence, it was given the name of its individual Central Reserve Police Force on the promulgation of the CRPF Act on 28 December 1949.
Apart from law and order and counter-insurgency duties the CRPF is playing an increasing part in India's general elections. This is particularly the case in those who were part of the state before Jammu as well as Kashmir, Bihar and in the North East, because of the occurrence of tensions and violent conflicts. In the election for the parliament in September 1999, the CRPF played a major role in security measures. In recent times, CRPF contingents are also being assigned into UN missions.
